Purpose

FONMSOEAM is a nonprofit federation of black and mestizo small-scale cocoa farmers from the Southwest of Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador. Created in 2000, it currently has over 300 members from 20 different communities in and around 120,000 hectares of the Mache Chindul Reserve primary virgin forest. FONMSOEAM’s objectives include:

·         To connect its members to the international cocoa market so as to receive better prices for this environmentally friendly product.

·         To help members receive and maintain organic and fair-trade certifications.

·         To provide technical and environmental training for more efficient growth and to diffuse the money gained from the sale of cocoa into social projects within the communities including public health, gender equality, education, and environmental awareness.

Source and types of cacao

Ecuadorian Theobrama cacao, recognized by numerous common names such as “cacao Nacional,” “cocoa Sabor Arriba,” and “cacao fino de aroma,” is harvested by the  FONMSOEAM farmers from numerous communities in five zones of the Esmeraldas Province of Northwestern Ecuador (Repartidero, El Centro, Muisne, El Sur, El Rio Sucio).

Marketeable products

Whole beans (en grano): cocoa beans are fermented and dried in El Centro de Acopio de FONMSOEAM in El Puente de Tonchigue, Ecuador.

Chocolate liquor (Licor de cacao): the cocoa beans are fermented, dried, and roasted in El Centro de Acopio. They are then shipped to Guayaquil, Ecuador where they are  separated from their shells, ground into cocoa paste, and melted into liquor which is cooled and molded into blocks of unsweetened baking chocolate.

Peeled beans (Pelado): cocoa beans are fermented, dried, roasted, and separated from their shells by hand in El Centro de Acopio.
