Purpose
FONMSOEAM is a nonprofit federation of black and mestizo small-scale cocoa farmers from the Southwest of Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador. Created in 2000, it currently has over 300 members from 20 different communities in and around 120,000 hectares of the Mache Chindul Reserve primary virgin forest. FONMSOEAM’s objectives include:
· To connect its members to the international cocoa market so as to receive better prices for this environmentally friendly product.
· To help members receive and maintain organic and fair-trade certifications.
· To provide technical and environmental training for more efficient growth and to diffuse the money gained from the sale of cocoa into social projects within the communities including public health, gender equality, education, and environmental awareness.

Source and types of cacao
Ecuadorian Theobrama cacao, recognized by numerous common names such as “cacao Nacional,” “cocoa Sabor Arriba,” and “cacao fino de aroma,” is harvested by the FONMSOEAM farmers from numerous communities in five zones of the Esmeraldas Province of Northwestern Ecuador (Repartidero, El Centro, Muisne, El Sur, El Rio Sucio).
Marketeable products
Whole beans (en grano): cocoa beans are fermented and dried in
Chocolate liquor (Licor de cacao): the cocoa beans are fermented, dried, and roasted in El Centro de Acopio. They are then shipped to
Peeled beans (Pelado): cocoa beans are fermented, dried, roasted, and separated from their shells by hand in El Centro de Acopio.
